Sandpit breach not on: Trigger

14 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
Hawk Cameron Tragardh has called on his side to defend "Fortress Sandpit" at all costs when heavyweights Gold Coast storm the gates on Saturday.

Wollongong and the Blaze share the NBL's best home record at 9-1, and Tragardh said maintaining that standard was the key to shoring up the Hawks' play-offs spot.

Wollongong (fourth, 11-10) go into round 16 holding the final play-offs card, while the Blaze (second, 12-8) could reclaim top spot with back-to-back victories against fifth-placed Adelaide and the Hawks this weekend.

"Every home game is important, I think we have the best home record in the league," Tragardh said.

"If we can hold court at home, then you can go on the road and really roll the dice and jag a couple and you'll be a play-off team.

"If you don't hold court at home, you certainly don't deserve to be in the play-offs.

"Every game we play at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre is a big game and one we expect to win."

Tragardh admitted his side would be gunning for revenge after two heartbreaking road losses to the Blaze.

"We've played up there twice and we've been in both contests, they were ones we felt we should have won, but there's plenty of those on the road," he said.

"We feel like we should have won both those games so we're certainly confident coming to our place."

The Blaze won 84-78 in round two and survived a furious comeback to scrape home 88-84 in round 13.

Gold Coast boast a modest 3-7 road record and their first visit to Wollongong comes less than 24 hours after a testing home date against the 36ers.

Tragardh acknowledged that scheduling could play into Wollongong hands.

"I was looking at (fifth-placed) Adelaide's schedule more than Gold Coast, theirs and New Zealand's because they're the teams nipping at our heels and we'd like to keep a bit of distance from them," Tragardh said.

"They're a very deep side the Gold Coast and I expect the minutes to be shared around and they've got guys who, if they play a lot of minutes (on) Friday other guys will be rested and can hurt you on the Saturday.

"We'll take any advantage we can get, if we're ready to go and they have a day of travel and a game the night before it could work for us."

Meantime, Gold Coast point guards Adam Gibson and Ayinde Ubaka are nursing twin corked quadriceps sustained last week.
