Wollongong's major off-season signing Glen Saville has vowed to ignore a broken finger and take his place in the Hawks starting five for next week's NBL season-opener against New Zealand.
Saville suffered the freak injury after catching a seemingly innocuous pass during the closing stages of Tuesday's training session.
An X-ray revealed a fracture in the ring finger of his right hand. Saville also damaged a tendon.
The injury is identical to the one the two-time Olympian sustained playing for the Hawks almost nine years ago.
Saville trained yesterday and has no plans of spending any time on the sidelines.
Wollongong battle the Breakers across the Tasman on Thursday night before taking on the Sydney Spirit two days later at WIN Entertainment Centre.
"I'll just wear the splint and hope that it heals up just like a normal fracture," Saville said.
"When I did it in the 1999-2000 season right towards the end of the finals, it wasn't a big deal because I taped it up and played with it.
"We got knocked out of the finals and then it seemed to come good and I just forgot about it.
"But it's the exact same finger, and I don't know if it was something from the fact it broke before, and whether that was an issue with it happening again.
"I'll get it X-rayed again in 10 days and find out whether it's healing properly. Hopefully it is healing, otherwise the other option is surgery, and I don't really want to go down that path because that's going to mean time off."
Mat Campbell and Anthony Petrie sat out a part of yesterday's training session at the Snakepit, but both are expected to be fit to play the Breakers.
