Still basking in the magenta afterglow of the Sydney Sixers' Big Bash League win, NSW batsman Nic Maddinson has turned his focus to a dominant year in longer forms of the game.
Maddinson was back training with the NSW squad yesterday morning, before joining his Sixers team-mates for a celebratory luncheon in Sydney.
The Shoalhaven Heads-bred and Warilla club junior missed out on a big score in the final against Perth on Saturday, but blasted 68 off 51 in the semi-final in Hobart to set the team on course for glory.
Maddinson's taste of success has only added to his thirst for Sheffield Shield runs, having overlooked the Indian Premier League auction to enhance his reputation as a future Test prospect.
"It is just a mental thing, adjusting back to other forms of cricket," the 19-year-old told the Mercury yesterday.
"We've enjoyed the win, but we're heading back down to Tasmania to play this weekend, so I've needed to get straight back into it.
"I didn't go in the [IPL] auction, because where I'm at, I'm better off to focus on four-day cricket.
"At the end of the day, I want to play Test cricket, that's my goal and it's something I want to work towards.
"Twenty20 isn't going anywhere, it's only going to get bigger, so it's something I can put more focus on again later."
The Sixers won the Twenty20 crown and qualified for the Champions League competition after chasing down Perth's total of 5-156, losing just three wickets along the way, including Maddinson for 10.
Maddinson is a near certain selection at No 3 for the ICL after averaging 30 in nine innings for the Sixers in the inaugural Big Bash competition.
But his focus shifts to improving on an inconsistent start to the domestic summer, declaring he is more confident than ever in his technique following the BBL competition.
NSW take on Tasmania in a one-dayer in Hobart on Saturday, before the Shield clash starts on Monday.
In November, Maddinson piled on 92 in a 233-run stand with Test dynamo Dave Warner, a day after scoring 225 for Sutherland in Sydney grade cricket.
But he has missed out on regular big scores this season and is still trying to cement his place in the one-day and Sheffield Shield teams.
