Graeme Batty shines as NSW pick up country title

14 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
Wollongong's Graeme Batty has taken out player of the tournament at the Australian Country Cricket Championships, en route to NSW’s 10th victory in the competition.

The Bush Blues finished the carnival in style, defeating East Asia Pacific by 74 runs on the final day to finish with six wins from seven matches.

Off the back of two man-of-the-match performances, Batty won the player of the carnival award on a countback from Northern Territory’s Grant Bell.

‘‘It was extremely unexpected, I didn’t have the tour that I wanted but it goes on umpire votes and I was fortunate enough to come away with it,’’ Batty said.

‘‘One thing I always say is that you don’t come to these carnivals for personal awards, you come to win the championship - and that’s what we did.’’

Batty finished the tournament with eight votes after hitting 250 runs, with an average of 39. The Keira captain was unlucky not to be named in the Australian Country XI, a side formulated on players who finish with the best averages for the carnival.

‘‘Some teams in the two-dayers bat twice, so obviously you’re looking at guys that have had more innings than those who bat once,’’ Batty explained.

NSW’s title is their first since 2008 and followed other titles in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1996 and 2001.
