Maddinson looking to the Futures for redemption

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
South Coast batsman Nic Maddinson will seek redemption on Monday when he plays in the Futures League match at Blacktown.

Maddinson was dropped from the NSW Sheffield Shield fixture in Tasmania after Test discards Usman Khawaja and Phil Hughes came into the line-up.

The 20-year-old had a successful Twenty20 Big Bash League campaign, winning the inaugural title with the Sydney Sixers and averaging 30 batting at No 3.

He told the Mercury earlier this week he hoped it would be a springboard to a dominant year with the bat in longer forms of the game.

Maddinson decided against nominating for this year's Indian Premier League Twenty20 auction to focus on his batting in the four-day competitions, working towards his ultimate goal as a Test player.

The left-hander had been picked for today's one-day match in Hobart, but received a setback when he was overlooked for the NSW Sheffield Shield team, with Steve O'Keefe and Scott Coyte picked alongside Khawaja and Hughes.

Fellow Warilla club junior Adam Zampa is also named for the Futures League clash against the ACT.

The 19-year-old spinner was a substitute fielder for Australia during the Test cricket match against India at the SCG last month.

Former Wests Illawarra product Phil Jaques - who this week announced his retirement from Australian first class cricket at the end of the season - will captain the Futures League team.
