Maddinson right at home with big boys

06 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
When 17-year-old Shoalhaven cricketer Nic Maddinson says it's sometimes scary playing in the Sydney first-grade competition it's not hard to see why.

Facing Australian fast bowler Stuart Clark while batting with former test opener Phil Jaques could unsettle any player's nerves, let alone a teenager.

But if recent form is anything to go by, opponents will be in for a shock when Maddinson starts feeling more comfortable.

Playing for Sutherland in his second season, Maddinson looks right at home in grade cricket.

In fact, he looked right at home from the start, smashing 84 on debut against Eastern Suburbs, including a massive six off Nathan Bracken. Then, in his first and only innings this season, he crafted a superb 142 against Parramatta. He survived two hours on a tricky deck on day one and then opened up with some aggressive strokeplay when he resumed.

"It's a pretty good experience but scary as well," Maddinson said of playing with and against international cricketers.

Jaques is a team-mate in the shire and, like Maddinson, is a hard-hitting left-handed opener who is a South Coast junior.

The pair have formed a close bond and when Maddinson scored his ton, Jaques was at the other end, giving a unique master-class as they put on a 170-run partnership.

"I'd done a bit of work with him in the nets leading up to it. The things we worked on he helped while I was batting as well. If there was something he could see that I'd gone away from that we had talked about, he was straight on to it," Maddinson said.

"He helps me get a game plan and explains the way he approaches batting. The mindset that he has is pretty much to make the bowlers bowl where he wants them to."

"It's a good experience to watch him go about it."

Sutherland president and former test wicketkeeper Steve Rixon says Maddinson bats well above his years.

"Everything I see about him is very good," Rixon said.

"He knows his game very well and plays to those limitations. He's got plenty of big shots but he's based a good defence around that as well and that's something you don't often see in a player his age, it's something that takes time."

Former Warilla team-mates Blake Hutchison (UNSW) and Adam Zampa (Eastern Suburbs) have joined Maddinson in Sydney this season.

Zampa was part of the Australian under 19 team which played Sri Lanka in a recent one-day series in Darwin where Maddinson scored an unbeaten 133.
