David Reid smashed an unbeaten century in only his third match of the season to lead Gerringong into a strong position against The Rail in their round 14 South Coast clash at Gerry Emery Oval on Saturday.
A week after Gerringong were routed for just 29, Reid ensured one of the Jets’ best batting days of the summer, belting an unbeaten 103 out of 238.
Returning from a shoulder reconstruction following a rugby league injury, Reid has only played in one one-day round and a mid-week Twenty20 match.
‘‘It was a great deck to bat on,’’ Reid said.
‘‘I was dropped on 40 edging one low down to the ’keeper, but it was a good day to bat, in a game we need to win.’’
The Rail skipper Col Yeaman claimed 4-61 and said his team - which will resume on day two at 0-6 - was not out of it.
‘‘I’m confident if we get the same conditions we can make the runs,’’ Yeaman said.
‘‘One dropped catch cost us plenty but we’re right in it. It’s pretty evenly poised.’’
Meantime, Kiama have the upper hand against Oak Flats at Cavalier Park.
Kiama made 167, led by Jan Haubruck’s 38 and claimed two key wickets in the final hour to have Oak Flats 2-18.
Oak Flats will have four players missing for Saturday’s day two - three players in the under 21 Colts carnival and one unavailable.
‘‘It makes it tough - we’ll have to bat well,’’ said Oak Flats skipper Ryan Chatterton.
In other games, Shellharbour are on target for victory against Jamberoo at Kevin Walsh Oval.
Joel Willstrop’s fine 58 helped Shellharbour post 167.
Jamberoo’s Josiah Riddington took 4-38, but the home side is in big trouble at 6-72, with Maddison Smith bowling a brilliant spell, taking 5-36.
Finally, premiers Warilla have wrapped up first innings points against Albion Park.
Warilla dismissed the Park for 124 and finished day one at 9-170. The Park skipper Jay Ferguson (33) and Jacob Lambert (24 no) top-scored. Warilla’s Gerard Healey took 4-22.
Warilla’s Gavin McCauley is unbeaten on 42, with the Park’s Matt Burns claiming 3-19.
