A stubborn middle-order guided University to a strong position against Wollongong in their vital round-10 Illawarra cricket clash at Uni Oval on Saturday.
An afternoon shower and overnight rain on Friday interrupted all matches in the first two-day round since round eight in mid-December.
Uni went into the clash against Wollongong in sixth spot - eight points behind fourth-placed Balgownie - and resume on Saturday’s day two at 9-186.
The Students were 4-49 before Taun Stanham (40) and Darren Murphy (48) combined for a 54-run stand to steer the home side out of trouble.
‘‘Darren and Taun, and the lower-order really fought hard and if we can make another 20 runs I’ll be happy,’’ Uni skipper Kurt Miller said.
‘‘It was a good effort from the middle-order down to put us in a reasonable position.’’
Second-placed Keira struggled with the bat and were bowled out for just 93 in 65.5 overs by a persistent Northern Districts attack at Hollymount Park.
Keira skipper and Australian Country Championships player of the carnival Graeme Batty made a duck on his return to the Lions, with opener Mark Johnston (33) top scoring.
Norths teenager Joe McDevitt took 3-22, with the Butchers to resume at 2-20.
Premiers Dapto batted well in difficult circumstances to make 5-158 at home to Wests.
Dapto opener Brad Young (58) top-scored and was supported by Dale Scifleet (30 not out) and Richard Marsh (35), with the premiers to continue their innings on day two.
‘‘We’re happy. It wasn’t easy conditions but we’ve batted well,’’ Dapto skipper Tommi Bozinovski said.
Clint MacKenzie bowled well for Wests taking 3-46 from 19 overs.
Finally, competition leaders Helensburgh are dominating Port Kembla at King George Oval.
Despite a patient 37 from skipper Daniel Lee, Port made just 121, with Burgh skipper Tim Lloyd taking 4-32.
The Burgh resume at 0-7.
‘‘There were a couple of wet spots on the pitch but it wasn’t really an excuse,’’ senior Port batsman Luke Hunter said.
