Wilmott goes in to bat for Mongoose

10 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
It looks more like a canoe paddle than cricket equipment, but Keira are hoping a bat nicknamed "the Mongoose" can propel them to the Illawarra Cricket Twenty20 title tonight.

Keira guest player Knut Wilmott will use the unique bat in the final against Wollongong at North Dalton Park.

Designed specifically to meet the demands of Twenty20 cricket, the Mongoose features a shorter blade and long handle.

"You get a lot of comments because it's pretty weird looking," Wilmott said yesterday.

"It just feels like a normal bat but people react to it."

Manufacturers claim the bat delivers 20 per cent more power and adds 15 per cent to bat speed.

A former Helensburgh first grader, Wilmott first used the bat while playing club cricket in England and met with instant success.

Batting for Bickley Park in Kent, Wilmott smashed a one-day century with his second use of the bat and was hooked.

"It hits the ball miles, it smashes it," he said.

"The whole bat is a hitting surface and when you do hit it you don't feel it but you see the ball go off into the distance.

"Last week I hit one and thought it would be caught, but the guy ended up catching it 5m past the fence."

The Mongoose does have its disadvantages, though, with short-pitched bowling difficult to handle with the shortened blade.

"You have to make good contact with the ball and it's a little unnerving when they dig them into you a bit short. If you get a quick one at your throat you might be worried."

Keira will be favourite for the final, despite Wollongong bowling their opponents out for just 69 in Illawarra Cricket last Saturday.

Wilmott said he was wary of their underrated line-up.

"I think Wollongong fly under the radar a bit," he said.

"They've got a pretty consistent team right through, whereas we really need to have a couple of guys to have a good game."

The final begins at 7.40pm, with the third-placed play-off between University and Dapto starting at 5pm.
