Cyclist Mark Jewell will take scintillating form into the Australian Masters Track Championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome from February 22-26.
The Illawarra star won six gold in six events at the NSW Masters Track Championships last weekend for a second time.
He is the only cyclist to have achieved a six-gold sweep twice in the state championships.
Jewell has bounced back positively after the bitter disappointment of being forced to withdraw from the World Masters Track Championships in Manchester last October, on the eve of flying out to England, because of a crash in training in which he finished up with broken ribs.
‘‘I’ve worked really hard on getting the base back ... a lot of road miles trying to get the body recovered and get my lungs back to capacity after having pneumonia and all that sort of stuff,’’ Jewell said.
‘‘I still have a little bit more work to do in the next couple of weeks leading up to the national titles.’’
Jewell will contest the individual time trial (Wednesday), individual pursuit (Thursday), sprint (Friday), points race (Saturday), team pursuit and scratch race (Sunday) at the nationals - the same events which he won at state level.
While Jewell’s clean sweep at the state titles was the outstanding feat at the meet, other Illawarra Cycle Club riders also performed admirably.
Versatile rider Catherine Hooten showed great speed and form when she won gold with Kylie Hilford in the women’s team sprint, as well as two individual silver medals in the individual pursuit and sprint, and bronze in the time trial.
Hilford also claimed bronze in the individual sprint.
Gary Mandy picked up a medal of each colour when he took bronze in the sprint and silver in the scratch, then combined with Jewell and David McMaster to win the team sprint.
Other ICC podium placings were Mark Spindler (silver in scratch race), Danny Hennessy (bronze in points race), Scott Butler (silver in individual pursuit, bronze in time trial and points race) and Neil Arnold (silver in individual pursuit, bronze in scratch race).
Jeff Gray, Craig Paull, Scott Harrison, Tony Burke, Gerard Hilford, Les Hewitt, Vince O’Dwyer, Rob Hernandez and Greg Brennan were the other ICC riders who competed.
