Berbis guarantees Wolves 2010 year won't be as bad as 2009

Newly appointed South Coast Wolves captain Lisandro Berbis has guaranteed there won't be a repeat of last year's nightmare campaign.

The 24-year-old will lead the wooden spooners after relocating from league champions Sydney United, it was announced yesterday.

Argentine-born Berbis said six seasons in the top flight prepared him to spearhead his new club's charge back to the promised land.

"We will not have a repeat of last year, that's for sure," Berbis said, referring to the club's five competition points in 2009.

"I have experienced highs and lows in the past six years in the Premier League. From winning the 2006 grand final with Sydney United to missing the whole of 2008 through injury, I feel I am now ready to handle any situation.

"I've had some excellent captains in the past so if I take what I have learnt from them and add a bit of my own personality I think I will be fine."

The midfielder will skipper one of the league's youngest squads, but believes that will be to the rebuilding outfit's advantage.

"I know that other teams will see that we are young, unknown and playing a new style of football as a weakness," he said.

"I encourage us to see it as a strength - we are a young team full of energy and ideas which other teams won't know what to expect."

Morgan plans to use Berbis in a defensive role as part of a 4-3-3 formation.

"I know (he) will take responsibility and I am looking to use him a lot this year."
