Caitlin Foord takes out international award

24 Nov, 2011 08:47 AM
Lake Illawarra schoolgirl Caitlin Foord has capped an incredible year after being named the Asian Football Confederation Youth Player of the Year overnight in Kuala Lumpur.

Foord was just 16 when she represented Australia at the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

A year 11 student at Illawarra Sports High, Foord’s mature performances on the wing for Australia in Germany earned her the Best Young Player award.

Her main rivals for the prestigious AFC award were Japan’s Mai Kyokawa and DPR Korea’s Yun Hyon-hi - the respective MVP and top goal-scorer at the AFC under 19 women’s championships.

Foord turned 17 on November 11 and is playing with Sydney FC in Australia’s W-League.

‘‘It’s fantastic to be one of the nominees first but ultimately winning the award makes me very happy,’’ Foord said.

‘‘Women’s football in Australia is going up and it will continue to grow more in years to come.’’
