Socceroo saving bullets for Asian Cup qualifier

10 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
Socceroo Scott Chipperfield is fit and firing, but might have to save his bullets for Oman instead of taking aim at Holland tonight.

The Bellambi product (pictured) scored twice for FC Basel last weekend, but may miss tonight's Sydney Football Stadium friendly to ensure he is ready to unload during the do-or-die Asian Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Speaking before training yesterday, Chipperfield declared shoring up Australia's stuttering Asian campaign the priority over a friendly against the world's No 3-ranked team.

"I'm not sure I'll be playing tomorrow. Wednesday is the most important game so I might be saved for then," Chipperfield said.

"I might play 45 (minutes) tomorrow and the full game against Oman - (coach) Pim (Verbeek) hasn't spoken to me yet."

While the Holland game is a marquee match-up, Australia are propping up their Asian Cup qualifying group and face leaders Oman at Etihad Stadium.

"The Oman game is an Asian Cup qualifier, Holland is a friendly and it's important we pick up three points for the Asian Cup," Chipperfield said.

Chipperfield revealed the fatigue of flying from Switzerland to Sydney - not the hamstring injury that ruined his preseason - put a cloud over his prospects of tackling the Dutch.

"It's (the hamstring) been good. I'm just a little bit tired - I've been playing 90 minutes a lot the past three or four weeks," Chipperfield said.

The 33-year-old echoed fellow Illawarra junior Luke Wilkshire's belief that the Dutch encounter was a measuring stick for next year's World Cup.

"It will be a good test, it will be good to see where we are at at the moment," he said.

"They will be dirty for losing to us last year and they have brought out a strong squad; there's some quality players."

Chipperfield is happy to be back in camp as Australia reaches the sharp end of its preparations for South Africa 2010.

"With the World Cup so near these are the games you want to do well in," he said.

"A lot of guys have taken their chances while I've been out, so the pressure is on."

Meantime, Wilkshire couldn't resist the temptation to remind some former team-mates from Dutch side Twente Enschede of Australia's 2-1 win in Eindhoven last year.

Wilkshire played in the Dutch league alongside tourists Stijn Schaars, Orlando Engelaar, David Mendes da Silva and Edson Braafheid and took time out to remind them the Oranje had never lowered Australia's colours.

"I've left them a few messages and given them some stick," Wilkshire joked.

"We kicked them in their backyard and we're going to do the same here."
