South Coast A-League bid on hold

21/02/2008 4:00:08 AM
South Coast A-League bid chairman Eddy De Gabriele said his group won't challenge for a spot in next season's national football competition.

Great South Football is instead focused on following its original plan of bidding to enter the A-League in 2009.

Sides from the Gold Coast and North Queensland are all but assured of spots for next season, De Gabriele said.

De Gabriele said because of this the likelihood of further expansion this time next year was an ideal scenario.

"The FFA has expressed to the bid group that we will be given every opportunity to express our case for entry into the 2009 competition," he said.

"We are definitely not going for 2008, we feel it is too risky as far as getting our business plan together, signing players and getting contracts in place with our sponsors.

"We also need time to ensure the community is part of this team."

Football Federation Australia is expected to confirm Gold Coast and North Queensland's addition to the league as early as Wednesday.

With a 12-team league the preferred model, a South Coast team would be well placed to enter the league in 2009 having had another year of business and football planning behind them.

Provided Gold Coast and North Queensland are given the green light next week, the new clubs will begin a hectic period of getting ready to play.

De Gabriele said talk of building the league two teams at a time was the ideal scenario.

"Adding two teams in 2008 and two more in 2009 makes it a pure business proposal, not an emotional and unstructured race for entry," he said

Great South Football has already confirmed DHL as a top-level sponsor and is hoping for further positive news from international electronics and mobile phone companies soon.
