Wollongong Community Football Club coach Glenn Fontana has called on the side's young guns to stake a claim for first team spots in their Tiger Turf Cup quarter-final tonight.
The NSW Premier League cellar dwellers will field a team with an average age below 20 against Penrith Nepean United at Gabbie Stadium.
Teenagers Corey Gameiro, Corey Horner, Aden Wade and Chris Nathaniel are expected to step up as WCFC continue their campaign for the only piece of silverware they still have any hope of winning in 2009.
First-team regulars Steve Hayes, Samet Kaynak and Jamie Pitt will miss the clash while mid-season signings Brian Vanega, Jamie McMaster, James Monie and Shay Spitz are ineligible to play for WCFC in Football NSW's answer to the FA Cup.
Adding to Fontana's headaches are injuries to mainstays James Lawrence, Dave Able and Ben Brondenberg.
However, Fontana isn't fazed by the prospect of fielding a team that could almost play in the under-20s competition.
"It's a great opportunity for the players, I want to give them match time," he said. "They are looking forward to the chance to impress and are hungry enough."
With his embattled side needing a near mathematical miracle to avoid the league wooden spoon, Fontana conceded the knockout was all that was left for the club in a miserable inaugural campaign.
"This is something for us to play for," he said.
