Defiant Wollongong FC coach John Turner believes his side is the favourite to win the NSW Premier League grand final after yesterday's 1-1 draw against Sutherland.
Yesterday's result handed the Sharks the league championship thanks to a better goal difference, but Turner feels Wollongong deserve to share top billing thanks to a nine-match unbeaten streak, including seven wins.
"For me, we're the premiers - tomorrow I'll look in the paper and see we're both on 44 points," Turner said after the match.
"I thought we killed them in the second half - we'll get another crack at them in the finals.
"Of course we want to win the grand final now - we have proven we are as good as any team in this league and are ready for the championship."
The NSW Premier League takes a break next week for the Tiger Turf Cup final, before the five-team finals series starts in a fortnight.
Sutherland will have week one of the finals off, while Wollongong will host third-placed Sydney Olympic and fourth-placed Manly United meet fifth-placed Sydney United.
One week later, the winner of the Wollongong-Olympic clash will face Sutherland for a spot in the grand final, which will be played at Penrith's CUA Stadium on September 7.
Turner said Wollongong's run to the finals will stand them in better stead than the Sharks come crunch time.
"If they (Sutherland) don't win their first semi-final, they won't make the grand final," Turner said.
"We'll get better throughout the finals series, we have been playing tough games week-in, week-out for the past six weeks.
"Sutherland have had one (tough game) - now they will have three weeks off and that's not going to help them.
"I think we'll be battle-hardened ... I don't know whether they will be."
The Wolves will be without at least Danial Cummins and Steve Hayes (both suspended) for their play-off opener.
Turner said he would have preferred to have lost yesterday's title decider than secure a draw and lose on goal difference.
"To go and play the team that has been on top of the league all year, at their home ground and come away with a 1-1 draw, you have got to be happy," Turner said.
"The only disappointment is that we didn't win the premiership because of goal difference.
"It was two good teams out there today - if you took us to extra time we would have dominated them - we just ran out of time.
"I told them before the game I couldn't be prouder of them - I said the goal before the season was 44 competition points.
"They got there, but it wasn't enough to win the championship."
