Wollongong Wolves get home final

06 Aug, 2008 04:00 AM
Wollongong FC's all-important NSW Premier League finals series opener will be played at WIN Stadium.

The Wolves will host Sydney Olympic at WIN Stadium on Friday, August 15, it was confirmed yesterday.

That match will be the Wolves' - who missed the league title on goal difference last weekend - first game at WIN Stadium since 2005.

It was feared the Wolves would have to move the finals opener out of the Illawarra - probably to Seymour Shaw Park at Miranda - due to a Football NSW decree that the Crehan Park surface was unfit for finals matches.

However, that scenario has been avoided thanks to help from Football NSW and WIN Sports and Entertainment Centres.

"Wollongong FC is extremely grateful to Football NSW and the Wollongong (WIN) Entertainment Centre for their co-operation and support to ensure this game is played in Wollongong," Wollongong FC chief executive Jock Morlando said.

"WIN Stadium will provide the best possible setting for the game, which is arguably the biggest competition football match to take place on the field for some time."

Morlando hopes WIN Stadium will be a sea of red and white for the final, as was Seymour Shaw Park for last Sunday's showdown with the Sharks.

If Wollongong win against Olympic, they will earn a rematch with Sutherland with a spot in the grand final awaiting the winner of that contest. The final series decider will be played at Penrith's CUA Stadium on September 7.

However, a loss would mean the Wolves would host the winner of the Manly-Sydney United elimination final. WIN Stadium would not be an option, as St George Illawarra will host New Zealand Warriors in an NRL match on Sunday, August 24.

Meantime, Wollongong FC midfielder Michael West will spend the next 10 days in St George Public Hospital after suffering a ruptured spleen against Sutherland.

West copped a heavy knock seconds after coming on as a substitute and was rushed to Sutherland Hospital.

He was then moved to St George Public Hospital after initially being listed as critical.

West has battled injuries for much of the year. They paled in comparison to the seriousness of Sunday's health concern.
