 Wolves' big test at home

Wolves' big test at home

06 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
South Coast Wolves coach Trevor Morgan admits his side will know where it stands in the NSW Premier League pecking order after a challenging start to 2010, including tonight's clash with Marconi.

The WIN Stadium tussle is the Wolves' only home game of a testing first month, which will end with showdowns against last year's premiers Sydney United and grand final winners Sutherland.

With South Coast gallant away to preseason fancies Bonnyrigg last weekend, Morgan wants his charges to repeat the dose against the Stallions, who were runners-up in 2009.

"You want to test yourself against the best and we'll find out really early how we match up," Morgan said.

"I'm looking at the first four games - we want to put ourselves in a position to win and test how close we are to the elite.

"I won't panic if we don't take maximum points, but it will bother me if we're not in the contest."

Morgan acknowledged knocking off the perennial heavyweights would give his side a psychological boost as they fight for respect after a nightmare 2009.

"You want to get results," he said.

"It would be nice to get a good start and winning at home is a priority."

South Coast's cause might be helped by Marconi's disrupted preparation.

East Timorese midfield wizard Nahuel Arrarte returned to the fold midweek after cutting short a stint in Korea, while a trio of African imports was late to arrive in Fairfield.

Morgan's squad had a light hit-out at WIN Stadium last night to get accustomed to the pristine surface.

With the club back pushing for support, Morgan declared results and performance equal as the Wolves embark on their top-flight journey.

"Both things are important - we'll certainly be playing for the win and will use our first home game to stamp our brand of football," he said.

Marconi are renowned for a slick passing game and Morgan wants his side to adopt a similar approach.

"They look to play football, they are one of the gun sides," he said.

"We will play a passing game too, I want that, the board wants that and the players want that."

Mark Piccolini is the only absentee for South Coast after being sent off in last weekend's 2-1 loss.

Kick-off is at 6.30pm after the Dandaloo-Port Kembla match at 2.30pm and under 20s at 4.30pm.
