Wolves call out rivals for unification precursor

17 Dec, 2009 03:00 AM
A mouth-watering showdown with Illawarra treble winners Dandaloo or perennial bridesmaids Bulli could be the centrepiece of the South Coast Wolves' 2010 preseason.

Coach Trevor Morgan hopes to organise a high-profile scrimmage against an area heavyweight - preferably the all-conquering men in Orange or Adrian Alston's troops - to cap preparations for the NSW Premier League campaign, which will start on February 27.

The Wolves - who remained in the state's top flight despite finishing last in 2009 - will face IPL outfit Wollongong United at Macedonia Park on February 7.

Morgan declared Wolves-Illawarra fixtures was a way of putting the much-vaunted unification push into practice.

"We'll be trying to get one of the best Illawarra Premier League teams for a game the week before our season starts," he said.

"It could be the starting point for both seasons and we'd like to have a Dandaloo or Bulli involved."

South Coast's preseason will start against a NSW Super League side on January 31 before a showdown with NSWPL rival APIA on January 24.

The Wolves will face another second-tier side on January 31 and defending champions Sydney United on Valentine's Day.

Morgan shot down suggestions his side had been left out in the cold by their NSWPL counterparts, some of which start preseason play this Saturday.

"Not at all, we don't feel that way, no-one is refusing to play anyone else," he said.

"It's a bit longer for one side or another to travel and we don't need to be playing anyone else."

The Wolves' final session before the Christmas break will be this Sunday at Elizabeth Park.

"The teams that are playing games this weekend are also doing beach runs - and finding some dinosaur skeletons," Morgan said.

"We're not worried about doing things a little bit differently.

"Some of our preseason games we're going to dominate the ball, some our defence is going to be tested."

Meantime, the club has come to terms with 2009 defender Dave Able. He could be joined in the centre of defence by trialist Greg Valic, who played for IPL side South Coast United in 2009.
