 Wolves get IPL back-up

Wolves get IPL back-up

16 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
The region's next football extravaganza is a reality, with treble winners Dandaloo to start their Illawarra Premier League title defence at WIN Stadium on Easter Saturday.

Dandaloo will move its round one showdown with Cringila to the CBD to serve as the curtain-raiser for the South Coast Wolves tussle against Blacktown on April 3.

The news came to light as five other clubs revealed they were likely to switch fixtures to WIN Stadium, creating a series of marquee double bills for South Coast football fans.

Dapto and Picton plan to shift one home date each, while the presidents of Port Kembla, Albion Park and Fernhill would consider the proposal, pending more information from the Wolves.

Four clubs - Cringila, South Coast United, Wollongong United and Woonona - are unlikely to transfer home games. Bulli and Tarrawanna representatives didn't return the Mercury's calls.

Earlier this month, Dandaloo's preseason showdown with Port Kembla became the entree to the Wolves' tussle with Marconi.

President Tony Hutchison declared the league-cup grand final winners could apply to play more games in town if the upcoming showcase is a success.

"We're looking forward to it, we're prepared to give it a go," Hutchison said.

"It's the first day of the competition, if it works for us we could do it a few more times during the year.

"We want to get the community involved and show football off.

"We'll be supporting the team playing in the highest league. We'll be watching the Wolves, we'd love to get 1000 people for the games."

A common theme amongst clubs unlikely to move games was missing out on canteen, gate and raffle revenue from their own grounds.

The Wolves are offering 50 per cent of gate takings, signage for IFA club sponsors and use of Premier's Room to clubs that take up the WIN Stadium offer.

South Coast Wolves chairman Paul Myjavec labelled the potential uptake "sensational".

"What great value for supporters - they get to see three games (the IPL and Wolves games, plus the Wolves under 20s) at one place," he said."If you love the sport, you can't do better.

"Before the first game we didn't have a second one, we've had a few phone calls from clubs looking to get involved."

Myjavec is sticking by his preseason estimate that five of the Wolves 11 home games would be preceded by IPL encounters.

"I would still leave it at five games until I hear from all the clubs," he said.

On Easter Saturday, the Wolves under 20s face Blacktown at 2.30pm. The Dandaloo-Cringila stoush will kick off at 4.30pm with the Wolves to tackle the Demons from 6.30pm.
