Wolves propose football showcase at WIN Stadium

15 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
Wolves games will be a showcase of South Coast football if an ambitious plan by the NSW Premier League club comes to fruition.

Illawarra clubs have been invited to play marquee matches at WIN Stadium before the Wolves' 2010 home fixtures.

If clubs embrace the concept, fans will be treated to a double bill of local and state league action at Wollongong's finest stadium.

The Wolves are pushing the innovative concept as an example of football unification in practice. Their plan came to light just a day after the first meeting of the full Football South Coast board, which is tasked with bringing eight interest groups under one banner.

"Instead of different levels of football competing against each other for crowds and sponsors we're working together for the good of the game," South Coast Wolves chairman Paul Myjavec said.

"People don't have to split their loyalties, they can get all their football at one time and place.

"It's the way forward, working together for what's best for the code."

Myjavec said a formal proposal to share the stage had been sent to the Illawarra Football Association.

Realistically, he said, he hoped for high-profile Illawarra Premier League curtain-raisers for five of the Wolves' 11 home dates.

"We're going to work with the clubs that are interested," he said.

"What we're going to do is take a softly, softly approach.

"Once one or two clubs get on board and it works, I think other clubs will do the same."

Myjavec said an ideal scenario was to have local and Sydney clubs of the same heritage playing at WIN Stadium on the same day.

He said he hoped the double bills would draw more than 2000 people.

While he conceded some clubs would be reluctant to give up their home games to move fixtures to WIN Stadium, Myjavec said the Wolves were offering WIN Stadium's gleaming corporate facilities and free signage to clubs that take up the offer.

"The clubs can bring their sponsors into the Premier's Room for free, they can come, relax, network," Myjavec said.

"It's a better venue and we'll get a lot more people through the gate."

outstanding new....but don't stop there please ensure the IJFA's Small Sided Games are also played....this would be great to see. It's happened before and you CAN do it again....moving an areas whole SSG round to WIN for a game would work well. please talk to the clubs and make it happen

Sounds like a great initiative and value for the punters.

This should of happened over 30 years ago when the wolves were the real wolves, and football was played the way it was meant to be played. Ahhhhhh, bring back the good ol days when clive campbell, 'big' billy degraff, arno, treddy, roy cotton johnny latham, phil o'conner, jim mcbreen, lee adams, peter willis, chris dunleavey, jimmy preston and co played the world game with such professionalism. Now that was a team to be proud to call the "Wollongong Wolves", and you would have 6-8 thousand at every home game.
