Major winners John Daly and Steve Elkington top the list of targets after the Wollongong Golf Club secured the rights for the Cellarbrations NSW PGA Championship in November.
In a coup for the region, the Links course will host the $110,000 second tier PGA Tour event for the next three years with some of Australia's best players set to compete in what looms as the biggest golf event held on the South Coast.
"Being from the South Coast, Elk will be getting a call and it might be worth talking to John Daly because he has no tour affiliation at the moment," Wollongong professional Neil Speirs said.
Daly, known as the "wild thing", burst on the scene by winning 1991 US PGA before taking out the British Open at St Andrews in 1995, while Elkington won Illawarra Mercury Sport Star of the Year after his only major success in the 1995 US PGA.
Speirs said the event, from November 19-22, is perfectly placed to attract a quality field between the Australian Masters, which Tiger Woods will headline, and the Australian Open at the beginning of December.
"The better Australian players will be back in the country for those events and we would like to think we would get a couple of them to Wollongong," Speirs said.
"Defending champion Tim Wood, who is playing in the British Open this week, is a confirmed starter.
"We will approach Tour players like Matthew Goggin, Brendan Jones and Nick O'Hern to come and I'm confident they will see it as a good lead-up to the Australian Open.
"Playing here two weeks out from the Open would make sense for a lot of players because it is a links set-up and is very similar to NSW (the Australian Open venue this year)."
Speirs is unsure whether he will play himself, as he will have a major role in the preparation and running of the event.
The Wollongong club has already attracted significant support from the community and will officially sign the contract to host the event later in the month.
"It's great for the golf club and Wollongong in general," club president Geoff Jones said.
"We are looking forward to a big week with some of the biggest names in Australian golf likely to be playing."
