Wollongong Golf Club professional Neil Speirs will call on the old mates' act to get Australia's hottest property Mathew Goggin to the Cellarbrations NSW PGA in November.
Goggin led the British Open yesterday morning before finishing fifth.
Speirs spent 1994 with the Tasmanian at the Australian Institute of Sport and was confident before the British Open he would be able to encourage Goggin to play in Wollongong.
"He has just ran fifth in the biggest tournament of the year and that could make it a little harder to get him," Speirs said. "I know him well and I think we are a pretty good chance of getting him because he will be here for the Masters (the week) before our tournament and the (Australian) Open (a fortnight) after it.
"He showed at Turnberry he plays links courses very well and it would be great to see him here."
The NSW PGA will be the first professional tour event played on the South Coast. Speirs is confident of attracting some of the biggest names in Australian golf to Wollongong because it is so close to Sydney.
Defending champion Tim Wood, who missed the cut at Turnberry, will play and stalwarts Peter Senior and Craig Parry are possibles.
"It's only a short drive down the highway and I think a lot of guys will want to play on a links course before the Australian Open at NSW," Speirs said.
