Illawarra hockey duo ready to take on the world

14 May, 2009 11:24 AM
Illawarra pair Tristan White and Kieran Govers are in Perth undertaking final preparations for next month's hockey Junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

The 16-man Australian team are going through an acclimatising process, which included session in a heat chamber yesterday, to ready them for the expected oppressive conditions in Kuala Lumpur.

"It was great to get into the squad after all the hard work but now we are concentrating on winning (the World Cup)," Govers said.

"We know that it is going to be tough against the European teams but we want to be the fittest side at the tournament, so that's why we are doing the hard work."

The 21-year-old has focused the past four years on making this team and overcame a chronic hip problem to make it.

"This was my one chance, so I was more relieved than everything to make it," the Albion Park midfielder said.

White will be an important role player in the Australian midfield at the World Cup and has put university on hold to concentrate on hockey this year.

The 18-year-old only emerged as a selection bolter after a late call-up to the NSW under 21 side last year.

"I wasn't even thinking about going to the (under 21) nationals this time last year, so it is amazing to be in the Australian team," Uni star White said.

"I know I'm going to be nervous when I get to KL but that's only natural when you're playing for Australia."

Meanwhile Olympian Casey Eastham has been chosen in a 24-member squad for August's women's Junior World Cup in Boston.

Eastham, who went to the last World Cup in Chile, was singled out by Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray as a leader in the squad.

"There is no doubt that she has the ability to one day become one of the top players in the world," Murray said.

"At such a young age she has already gained a lot of valuable experience and her inclusion in this squad will allow her to develop her leadership abilities."
