Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth has axed Keiraville's Kieran Govers from the national team for next month's Commonwealth Games campaign.
Govers, who is in Perth at the Australian Institute of Sport, was yesterday left out of Australia's squad for the Delhi Games.
"At first I was a bit disappointed," Govers said.
"But I'm going to meet with Ric in the next couple of days and he'll let me know where I'm at."
Govers played a part in Australia's triumphant World Cup and Champions Trophy campaigns this year yet still Charlesworth couldn't make room for him in his 16-man Kookaburras squad.
The Aussie mentor has recalled veterans Liam De Young, Luke Doerner and Robert Hammond to the team after the trio missed last month's Champions Trophy in Germany.
Govers, who joined 40 other potential squad members for a training camp in Brisbane last month, was adamant yesterday's snubbing wouldn't harm his chances of playing at the London Olympic Games.
"I've been to every major tournament this year so I can't complain," he said.
"He could only pick 16 and he decided to give a few new guys a run."
Australia will face Scotland in their opening Commonwealth Games pool A match on October 6.
Despite there being 11 Commonwealth Games debutants - including youngsters Jason Wilson, Chris Ciriello and Joel Carroll - in the squad, the Kookaburras remain the favourites to take out the gold medal.
It wasn't all bad news for Govers yesterday.
He at least earned a contract with the Australian team for another year.
The contract extension will keep him in Perth for another 12 months and means turning down an opportunity to play alongside Aussie teammate Jamie Dwyer in Mannheim next year.
"I would like to go over to Germany one day in my career to test myself," he said. "But for now I'm just going to stay in Perth because my main goal is to make the Kookaburras squad for the Olympics."
Govers will tonight line up for Australia A in a match gainst Argentina at Perth Hockey Stadium.
