Bookies shocked at flood of Cup bets

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
The Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking was backed to win more than $1 million with TAB Sportsbet yesterday but Viewed remains favourite to win his second consecutive Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington today.

In a dramatic lunchtime betting coup, Shocking was backed from $12 to $10 across a couple of hours with bets of $40,000 and $30,000 at $12 and $28,000 at $11.

"As soon as we put (Shocking) out to $12 the punters hit us," TAB Sportsbet's Matt Jenkins said.

"His win in the Lexus Stakes on Saturday was good but we weren't expecting that sort of money for him."

There was also a long price morning move for the Luca Cumani-trained Basaltico, which was $51 into $35 on the back of bets of $4000 at $51 and $41.

However, Viewed remains favourite and has tightened from $5.50 to $4.80 since Sunday and was the popular elect on the NSW and Victorian TABs last night.

"The money has just been consistent for Viewed and kept coming since the weekend," Jenkins said.

"He is a small loser for us.

"I think he is certain to start favourite on the totes given the Bart Cummings factor and that he won the Cup last year.

"He was the second best backed horse behind Shocking (yesterday) and while there is no big money there for him, like Shocking, there are a lot of $1000 or $2000 bets coming in for him," he said.

Alcopop was steady as the second favourite at $6, while the Cummings-trained Roman Emperor was $8.

While Shocking's plunge was occurring punters were stepping in to back Kiwi mare Daffodil from $17 to $14 at the Call Of The Card lunch.

Melbourne bookmaker Alan Eskander stood her to lose around $1 million but the traditional big betting luncheon was unusually quiet.
