Fifteen years of bowls has never delivered a better day than yesterday for Tommy Dunn, who with Figgy Bowlo clubmate Ray Smiles are into the pairs quarter-finals at the South Pacific carnival.
The pair have already had their best tournament following a titanic 16-15 victory over Taren Point's Jason Watkins and Chris Green at headquarters Woonona BC.
Forty-eight pairs section winners were trimmed to just eight teams after three rounds yesterday with some of the biggest names joined by a self-described "scrubber" in Dunn, and Smiles.
"It's my best day ever, it feels pretty great to be in the last eight," Dunn said.
Dunn's big day became more special, having been drawn to face Australian bowls legend Steve Glasson and his son Ben in a quarter final tomorrow morning.
"Steve's an absolute legend of the sport and true gentlemen and to think we get to play him will be just incredible," Dunn said.
The Glassons had three tight wins - by a combined seven shots - in the pairs knockout rounds yesterday.
Albion Park's Charlie Cheetham is a two-time South Pacific fours champion, but rated making the last eight of the pairs with clubmate Russell Campbell a highlight, after they eliminated Kevin Walker (Woonona) and Sean Mawdsley (Warilla) 19-13 in the round of 16.
"It's great a couple of Park lads to still be standing with the big boys," Cheetham said.
Among the best wins of the day was father and son Ashley Christie and Tim Christie beating Col Cheadle and Robbie Warren 17-13 to reach the quarter-finals.
Today's schedule begins from 9.30am with singles quarter-finals, followed by singles semis from 1pm.
This afternoon two pairs quarter-finals - skip Geoff McGillivray v Dave Ferguson and skip Charlie Cheetham v Tim Christie - will be played.
Tomorrow morning will be the fours semi-finals, plus the two remaining pairs quarter-finals between skips Tommy Dunn v Steve Glasson, and Mal Lyons v Shane Garvey, followed tomorrow afternoon by the pairs semi-finals.
