John Green's bowls carnival glory

07 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
In the staid world of lawn bowls, it was as emotional as it gets.

John Green, eyes masked by a pair of Oakley sunglasses, shed a few tears after he yesterday became just the fifth bowler to win the singles and pairs at the same South Pacific tournament.

An army of well-wishers swamped Green after he completed a clinical 31-8 demolition of James Webster for his maiden individual title.

If that attention wasn't enough, Green was coming to terms with joining a who's who of bowls, including championship-winning pairs team-mate Matt Sargeant, Shane Garvey, Aaron Sherriff and Brett Duprez as the only winners of the fabled double.

"I was very emotional, I thought I had him halfway through, his body language was down and I felt strong," Green said.

"Everyone says when things like this happen it's the best thing ever and I can't think of anything better in my bowls career.

"To do what those other bowlers have done and with such a hard draw and to win the pairs was sensational.

"They're some of the elite bowlers in the modern time, I'm nowhere near as good as them but I'm rapt to be in their company."

Green beat high flyers Zoran Bosev, Geoff McGillivray, Brad Rossiter and Garvey to reach his first singles decider since 1999.

He then fought back from a 6-3 deficit after six ends to clinch the crown.

"To beat James 31-8 after being behind early was pleasing," Green said.

"I toughed it out and concentration is what I've learned with experience. I put some pressure on him and he maybe didn't handle it that well, it comes with experience.

"I kept on aiming for ones and the multiples kept coming."

Green's perfect day started when he and Sargeant combined to win an unprecedented fourth pairs title via a 25-14 win over Roger Duggan and Jim Green in the morning.

"It's awesome, no-one has done that before and that speaks volumes for itself," Green said.

Towradgi Park has proved a happy hunting ground for the popular Corrimal bowler - he and Sargeant completed a hat-trick of pairs titles in 2007, just after Green was a runner-up in the fours.

Green and Sargeant scored a four on the opening end before Albion Park fought back to hold a 10-9 lead after 11 ends.

However, the favourites scored a five for 14-10 and kept their opponents at arm's length to seal victory with an end to spare.

Congratulations Greeny. You have come a long way since being beaten back in 3rd and 4th class at Corrimal primary school playing marbles. All that pressure!
