Matt Sargeant clinched the fours crown and back-to-back player of the carnival honours, while Shane Garvey produced a thrilling comeback victory over his new Wiseman Park Wollongong City clubmate in yesterday’s singles final.
Garvey trailed throughout but came from 29-27 down to take two shots on consecutive ends for a 31-29 win.
On a marathon day of finals, Sargeant played for almost eight hours, skippering his Wiseman Park fours team of Nathan Joannou, Mick Japundza and Glen Taylor to a 21-20 win over John Green’s team, then backing up for a nail-biting 3-hour singles decider.
Sargeant played 22 matches and all nine days of the carnival, clinching his fourth player of the carnival award with the win in the fours.
‘‘It’s been a long tournament but I’m happy,’’ Sargeant said.
‘‘The fours was great and I’m really pleased for my team-mates.
‘‘I’m not disappointed with the singles. It came down to a bowl or two and that’s the game of bowls. Shane’s a great bowler and we’re clubmates now so well done to him.’’
Garvey trailed by 3-4 shots for virtually the whole match in what will be remembered as one of the best finals in carnival history.
Despite being down 25-21 and 28-24 Garvey rallied to only trail 28-27, before on the next end, Sargeant played a tremendous final bowl to pick up two shots for a 29-27 lead.
But Garvey, the now four-time singles champion, refused to yield, and his consistency was rewarded with some great draw bowls in the final two ends.
‘‘That’s the best win I’ve ever had at the carnival,’’ Garvey said.
‘‘It was a classic final. I just hung in there and made the shots when I needed it.’’
The fours win and singles runner-up earned Sargeant his fourth player of the carnival award since 2006, and he joins Garvey as the only player to win the award four times since the honour was introduced in 1986.
In the fours decider, Sargeant had to withstand a late rally from Green and partners Liam Dun, Barry Martin and Rohan Brassey.
Sargeant was 10-1 after five ends and 21-13 with just three ends remaining. Green then picked up a two, then a four and in a tense final end was held to just one shot, giving Wiseman Park a 21-20 win.
