Gong's Jack Millar snatches Youth Olympic qualifier

20 Jan, 2012 07:44 AM
Despite a below-par performance in his maiden Youth Winter Olympics Games, Wollongong’s Jack Millar has qualified for the top 16 of the ski cross competition.

A Year 12 student at The Illawarra Grammar School, Millar’s time of 59.46 was enough to qualify in 13th place after his first run Innsbruck, Austria.

“It wasn’t too bad,” this 16-year-old said.

“I made a few little mistakes which slowed down my time a bit, but hopefully I can fix those up in the finals.

‘‘I took a few turns too wide and played it conservative.”

Millar’s compatriot Harry Laidlaw had a much easier time of it, qualifying fourth fastest with a time of 57.43.

The Australian pair will now race in one of the four heats of four athletes due to begin at 9.30pm AEDT tonight. The top two from each heat will progress to the semi-finals.

Fifteen-year-old Claudia Leggett qualified for the girls’ final with the fifth fastest time.

Millar is one of just 13 athletes representing Australia at the Youth Winter Olympic Games.
