Garrett Newton is a young man on the rise and his next step up the ladder will be made with five-year-old mare Dymondee in the Group One Cordina Chicken Farms Ladyship Mile (1760m) at Harold Park tomorrow night.
The 21-year-old has only had his training licence for two years.
But he has managed to tame the half-sister to Blacks A Fake and finally get her going in the right direction.
"She never had a nasty streak but she would break headcollars every time she was tied up early on," Newton said.
"It was just a matter of being patient with her and getting her trust and now she is very quiet.
"She's always had the ability and once I got her right she has been able to show it.
"Getting her to this race is a big thrill and she is right in it given the right run."
Dymondee earned her place in the Ladyship Mile with a closing third, only a short head, long neck from Misty Miller in the Robin Dundee Stakes (1760m) at Harold Park last week.
The pair were split by Flaming Yomax, who Newton could have also been training if he was a bit quicker off the mark.
"I went up to Eric Basham's place at Young to get a horse and he said to me that if I was there a couple of days earlier I could have had one of two in the other paddock there," Newton said.
"One of those (two) was Flaming Yomax, which is amazing considering both horses will be in the Ladyship on Friday.
"I ended up leasing this mare because of her family and she has the potential to be a similar sort of mare (to Flaming Yomax).
"She is still only a C7, M1 horse and this is her first real test against the top mares.
"I think she will be better next year but the time is right to take the big guns."
Newton has the benefit of training out of Brian Hancock's farm at Albion Park after starting there seven years ago as a teenager.
He has been picking the legend's brain about what to do with Dymondee as she's progressed through the grades.
"You learn something every day around here from Brian," Newton said. "I learned a long time ago to keep my eyes open and listen to everything he says.
"I think I might have driven him mad this week asking questions."
Dymondee, who is a $26 chance in the Ladyship, completed her final workout with Hancock's Cordina Sprint runner Master Of Disguise yesterday and Newton was quick to turn to his mentor after some strong work.
"It's great to have him out there with me because he has been there and done it all before," Newton said.
"Not many people have the chance to learn from a master."
