Fanning rides into town for junior series

02 Jul, 2008 05:00 AM
Australia's world surfing champion Mick Fanning will be in Wollongong tomorrow to promote the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters series which kicks off at Werri Beach this weekend.

Fanning is stoked to be giving something back to grassroots surfing.

"An opportunity like Red Bull Junior Surf Masters doesn't come along very often and could be just the break these young guys need to launch their surfing careers," Fanning said.

"It will be intense competition designed to pick only the best surfers, but is the first step that could realistically see someone go from their local beach to some of the most amazing surf venues in the world."

Fanning will be at Surf Dive 'n' Ski in Crown Central between 4pm and 5pm.

The junior surf masters is open to young surfers between 15-19 years old and is a first-time event being held in NSW this month and next.

The first prize is the biggest awarded for a junior surf event in Australia and is designed to help up-and-coming surfers launch their pro career.

A series of five qualifying events take place at various locations, including Werri Beach this weekend.

Fanning will be attending the final at Queenscliff Beach on August 29.
