Brilliant Bulli runner Ryan Gregson won the 800m in the inaugural Hunter Track Classic at Newcastle last Saturday night.
Gregson went in to the race in overcast, breezy conditions with a personal best time of 1min47.38sec, which he set in Rieti, Italy, last September.
He won it in a new personal best time of 1.47.06 - the fastest 800m time on Australian soil for two years.
The strong race line-up included four-time Australian 800m champion Nick Bromley and former world junior championship finalist James Kaan.
The first lap was covered in 53.22sec by the pacemaker with Gregson sitting in a good position in fourth place, covering the first lap in 53.7.
The field started to break up after 550m with Gregson working his way through the field, taking the lead with 150m to go.
NSW under 23 champion Tristan Garrett was second in 1.48.33, with promising Sydney runner James Gurr third in 1.48.61. Bromley was fourth in 1.48.98 with Kaan fading over the final 200m to finish in 10th position.
Gregson was extremely happy with his race given he does not race many 800m events and is looking forward to his next run, a 1500m event on Friday night at the Hobart Grand Prix.
