Jack Millar’s bid for a Youth Winter Olympics medal in Innsbruck was thwarted after his ski cross final was abandoned due to a dangerously heavy snowfall.
The Illawarra Grammar School student had qualified for the top 16 final, but the event at the Austrian resort of Kuhtai, outside Innsbruck, was cancelled following the extreme weather.
Millar had qualified for the head-to-head finals in 13th spot after the qualification run last Friday.
The heavy snowfall forced officials to postpone the finals on Saturday, then further falls meant the event had to be called off.
‘‘There’s been over a metre [of snow] just overnight, so logistically it just couldn’t happen,’’ Australian ski cross coach Shawn Fleming said.
‘‘Mostly, you wouldn’t even have been able to get to the venue and they couldn’t have controlled the avalanche danger.’’
Millar finished in 13th place, with competitors assigned their qualification positions as their final placing.
‘‘I’m pretty disappointed overall,’’ the 16-year-old said.
‘‘My strong points are against other people in starts, so hopefully I would have got a better result, but it is what it is and I just have to deal with it.
‘‘It has given me a broader aspect on my skiing. The Olympics are a totally different sort of situation than a normal race, so it’s been really great.’’
Melbourne alpine skier Harry Laidlaw blitzed his ski cross qualification to be placed fourth overall.
Fifteen-year-old Claudia Leggett, Australia’s only female ski cross representative, was assigned fifth position.
Millar was among only 13 athletes representing Australia at the Youth Winter Olympic Games.
