Parrish Byrne's close call in Japan

30 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
Bulli surfer Parrish Byrne claimed a last-gasp victory at the ASP WQS 4-Star Billabong Tsurigasaki Pro at Ichinomiya, Japan, last Sunday.

Japan's Teppei Tajima led for the majority of the final against Byrne in a moderate 1m-11/2m surf.

With a few minutes remaining, Byrne fought back strongly with an excellent 9.33 wave to take the lead.

However, Tajima struck back hard with an excellent 9.0, but not enough to regain the lead.

With a points total of 16.83 to Tajima's 16.50, Byrne was crowned the 2009 Billabong Tsurigasaki Pro Champion.

Byrne, with two Japanese surfers - Tajima and Izuki Tanaka - and Hawaiian Joel Centeio, made it to the semi-finals.

In semi-final No 1, Byrne overcame hometown favourite Tanaka to advance to the final and was joined by Tajima, who defeated Centeio in his semi.
