Rubber duckies hit Towradgi Beach for state championships

03 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
A record field will contest this weekend's NSW Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) championships at Towradgi Beach.

The state's premier carnival for "rubber duckies", the event will feature 239 competitors representing 22 clubs.

This will be the second time in as many years Towradgi has hosted the IRB state titles.

IRB racing has steadily grown over the past few years after officially returning in 2004.

"This is the most clubs we've had enter the state championships since 2004 and the level of competition gets tougher each year," Surf Life Saving NSW Surf Sports Manager Jodi Thomas said.

"This is good news for the upcoming surf patrol season as it develops the skills and experience of our IRB crews for use in real rescue situations."

With an expected 1m swell and south-westerly winds, organisers believe competitors will have to contend with tougher conditions than those that prevailed at the 2008 tournament.

Thirroul are tipped to throw down the challenge to reigning champions Caves Beach, while Kiama Downs are also likely to be among the main title contenders.

"The competition is open to all NSW clubs but distance, time and cost are contributing factors in the number of teams that attend," Thomas said.

"The 22 clubs are from as far north as South West Rocks, who will be hosting the Country Championships in January 2010, with Kiama Downs the most southern club competing." Racing gets under way at Towradgi tomorrow.
