Bulli's teenage running sensation Ryan Gregson became the youngest winner in the history of Australia's premier 10km road race, the Tasmanian Burnie 10, on Sunday. The race, an out-and-back run around the beautiful foreshores of Burnie, on the north-west coast of the Apple Isle, attracted Australia's distance running elite, including 5000m Beijing Olympian and favourite Collis Birmingham, 2006 Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase fourth placegetter, 2008 City to Surf and 2008 national cross-country winner Martin Dent from the ACT, 2007 national cross-country winner Jeff Hunt and 2008 national cross-country runner-up Ben St Lawrence. The star-studded field was greeted with a sunny but windy day and a huge crowd lining the course.Gregson, 18, was part of an initial lead pack of seven runners including all the favourites. The course was undulating throughout, with a steep incline towards the finish line. The splits varied between 2.46 and 3.08 for each kilometre throughout based on the hills and the prevailing wind. With 1500m to run, the lead group was reduced to three with Dent, St Lawrence and Gregson. Dent was dropped with 1000m to run before Gregson kicked from 600m out as he saw the finishing tape at the top of the hill.Gregson was able to pull away from St Lawrence to finish in the great time of 29min 09sec, with St Lawrence (29.13) and Dent (29.15) filling the placings.Gregson was ecstatic with the win, one of the highlights of his running career to date, and the first time he had competed against and beaten some of Australia's best distance runners.Gregson continues his 2008 middle-distance running campaign in Australia's biggest 5km road race, the Noosa Bolt, on Saturday, November 1.Then it's on to the NSW 3000m track championships in Sydney on the evening of Saturday, November 8 - the race in which he broke Craig Mottram's Australian under-20 record last year.
