Sally Fitzgibbons keen to outdo Woods

08 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
Gerroa surfer Sally Fitzgibbons will be gunning for revenge when she faces nemesis Rebecca Woods in the opening heat of the Rip Curl Women's Pro at Bells Beach.

Rookie Fitzgibbons has been drawn alongside Woods and Amee Donohoe in the all-Australian heat, one of the second ASP Women's World Tour events, which is expected to start today.

A last-minute wave by Woods dumped Fitzgibbons out of the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast last month, her first event as a full-time world tour entrant.

Fitzgibbons, 18, vowed to shake off that disappointment.

"Rebecca knocked me out last time, so it would be good to reverse that at Bells," Fitzgibbons said.

"She and Amee both have a lot of experience and they both know a lot about Bells, so it should be a competitive heat."

Fitzgibbons enters the event 13th on the 17-entry world tour, after being eliminated in round three at Snapper Rocks.

The 2008 World Qualifying Series winner said she had overcome a back strain that hampered her bid to win her world tour debut last month.

"I have been working really hard to get back to full strength since Snapper Rocks," Fitzgibbons said.

Fitzgibbons is one of a number of teenage tour rookies tipped to challenge two-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore this year, and would love to snare her maiden world tour victory at the iconic Victorian break.

"It would be lovely to get a result down here and get a few rounds further than I did last time.

"I would love to lift up that bell (event trophy) at the end of the event," she said.

"I'm really excited to be at Bells - there's so much history here."

Fitzgibbons, who dominated the world's junior ranks before turning pro, last won at Bells in 2006, when she was victorious at the Australian Gromsearch final.

The opening heats are expected to be held in cold conditions and yesterday's 1.5m swell is likely to drop today.
