Illawarra baseball player Eryn Shipp will realise a childhood dream when she departs for the United States on Friday, bound for Boston, Massachusetts.
Shipp, 22, has been invited to participate in the North American Women's Baseball League (NAWBL) along with players from Canada, Japan and Australia as part of a cultural exchange program.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Shipp said. "It's a fantastic opportunity and the experience will be great."
The Shoalhaven player is expected to play for Boston Pride in the competition, which runs from June 15 to August 17.
Shipp has been an Illawarra and regional representative for more than five years and was the first female player from the region to play with Country NSW at the Australian Women's Championships.
She has been playing for the Shoalhaven Mariners, a club started recently by former Illawarra Flame coach David Mitchell, his son, Blake Mitchell, and Michael Taylor.
Shipp has put a lot back into her sport, serving as the Illawarra Junior Baseball League secretary for the past two years, and has been instrumental in developing a regional junior female program.
The NAWBL will be playing games at the commemorative fields that were used by its forerunner - the original All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).
The AAGPBL was featured in the hit movie A League of Their Own, starring Geena Davis.
While she is in the US, Shipp will also be meeting up with a combined international team that was put together by the organisers of the Aussie Hearts team that she played with at a Hong Kong tournament earlier this year.
AAGPBL legend Jeannie Lesko and Aussie Hearts' Rob Novotny will coach the team, along with some guest US coaches.
Lesko visited the Illawarra in 2006 after being invited by Shipp to conduct a training camp in the region.
