South Coast riders Matt Moss and Ryan Marmont have begun their respective American supercross campaigns with impressive top 20 finishes during Sunday’s opening round in Anaheim.
Racing in the prestigious AMA series, Moss stormed home to a credible 11th in his debut Pro Lites appearance. His JDR Motorsports team-mate Marmont, who received a late call-up only days before the event, finished 17th.
Kiama’s Cody Mackie rounded out the South Coast contingent with an encouraging performance in the Pro Open category. Riding against the world’s best, including fellow Aussie Chad Reed, the 25-year-old privateer narrowly missed out on the final.
The 17th place culminated a whirlwind week for Wollongong’s Marmont, who was originally due to travel to the US today to contest the East Coast series but will instead ride for injured team-mate PJ Larsen in the West Coast card. The 26-year-old had little time to prepare after recently having screws taken out of his left ankle.
“Although Ryan struggled in the main event, we were very excited he qualified and represented our team,’’ JDR’s team manager Nate Ramsey said. ‘‘He has only been able to ride the bike twice and we are happy with his progress.’’
Sussex Inlet’s Moss said he was extremely satisfied with the result and looked forward to stronger performances on the world stage.
“I am very excited to come to the US and race and I am thankful my team has given me this opportunity,” he said. ‘‘I have tried several times to come over here and race but I have always ended up hurt before the season started so I am grateful I am already off to a much better start this season.’’
