South Coast surfers put their local knowledge to use at Werri Beach over the weekend at the NSW Open Surfmasters Titles.
Bulli resident and mother-of-two Yvonne Byron led the charge, dominating her opposition in the over 28 division, while Woonona East legend Terry Richardson won the over 50 men's title.
The 33 year-old Byron is a three-time Australian Open champion and former WCT Tour member, but said winning an age-category state title was still a major thrill.
SLIDWSHOW: All the surfing action from Gerringong"It's still satisfying, it's always satisfying to win," she said.
"But the over 28s is a bit more relaxed ... I don't think everyone's as worried about the results as they get older.
"It's more fun, it's probably more about catching up with people you know.
"Camaraderie more than competition."
Byron defeated Sandra English (Budgewoi), Nicola Turner (Cronulla) and Karen Myers (Newcastle) in the final, launching a savage backhand attack on Werri's beach break.
In the over 50s, Richardson turned back the clock with a dominant performance, the former ISA World Masters Champion revelling in the solid 1.5m conditions.
Richardson defeated Neil Cameron (Far North Coast), John Skinner (Warilla) and Chris Trelfo (Blue Bay).
Richardson and Byron will now compete at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival in August.
In the blue ribbon men's open final, Perth Standlick snatched victory in the final with a last-minute wave.
The Bondi surfer trailed Cabarita's Josh Fuller but grabbed a seven out of 10 with his last ride to secure the win, his first at this level.
"I just did a floater and a reo, I'm pretty happy," he said.
"It should be fun going to the Aussies. Hopefully I do well there and make the world's team."
Standlick said some previous trips to the South Coast had helped him during the tournament.
"I've surfed this spot quite a few times," he said.
"I come down to the South Coast quite a bit, to Ulladulla. This wave (Werri) is a beach break and is like Bondi, so it just felt like home."
In the men's over 35 division former ASP Tour surfer Toby Martin edged out Woonona Dan Dignam for his first state title in 15 years of pro surfing.
Other winners were: Open Women - Brittany Nichol (Cabarita, NSW); Over 28s Men - Ricardo Ortiz (Newport, NSW); Over 35s Women - Sandra English (Budgewoi, NSW); Over 55s Men - Wayne Roach (Bega, NSW); Over 45s Men -Rod Baldwin (Copacabana, NSW); Over 40s Men - Glen Pringle (Cronulla, NSW).
