Triple treat for Austinmer: three crews race in boat final

07 Dec, 2009 09:14 AM
Austinmer's dominance of the Warilla Bowls Surf Boat series reached unprecedented heights in Saturday's second round at Warilla.

A multiple champion of the series since its inception 10 years ago, Austinmer broke new ground with three crews qualifying for the open men's final.

With the odds stacked heavily in their favour, Austi claimed line honours in a closely contested decider, with Moruya Vikings (second) and Batemans Bay (third) happily spoiling any hopes the northern suburbs powerhouse had about a possible clean sweep.

Lining up for the triumphant Austinmer outfit were three members of the Austinmer under-23 crew which claimed back-to-back Australian titles in 2008 and '09.

Round two was contested by 79 crews across various divisions, with competitors greeted by what series co-ordinator John Masters described as "excellent conditions".

In the open women's final, Windang were unable to emulate their winning performance from the previous round, finishing second behind Austinmer.

Gerringong were third, while Moruya and Warilla-Barrack Point failed to reach the final, despite both crews taking good form into Saturday's carnival.

The upsets continued in the reserve men's division, with several favoured crews falling short of the final.

Corrimal emerged victorious ahead of Wollongong City and Warilla.

Batemans Bay prevailed in the under-23 men's final, with Bulli second and Wollongong City third. First-round winners Woonona finished fifth.

Helensburgh-Stanwell Park and Austinmer filled the minor placings.

Bulli Gold were outstanding in the under-19 men's final, coasting to an easy win ahead of Broulee and Port Kembla.
