St George Illawarra winger Michael Lett is refusing to lay down the red carpet for Wendell Sailor.
The Dragons are plotting the path for Sailor to make an expected return to the NRL in a round 13 showdown with his former club the Brisbane Broncos at WIN Stadium on June 6.
But Lett, the right winger expected to make way for the dual international and four-time premiership player, isn't giving up.
"While I'm here I want to make it hard for Wendell to get in the team," he said.
"Because I want to be in the team myself. I want to make the most of it while I'm here."
A junior Kangaroos representative in 2005, the 21-year-old has spent time with Parramatta and the Sydney Roosters before moving to the Dragons last year.
And in just his second game with St George Illawarra, Lett was impressive on Saturday night.
While left-sided Jason Nightingale and Josh Morris were doing damage to the Storm in the absence of Origin players Mark Gasnier and Matt Cooper, Lett joined the party in the second half, scoring his first NRL try in the 36-12 win.
Nightingale had floated across to dummy-half, before the plucky Lett called, demanding the football.
He'd spotted a chink in the Storm's armour and made the most of it, streaking away to complete a 40m break.
"I'd done all I could, I thought I played pretty good. I didn't do any harm at all to myself," Lett said.
"The try helps, I go out every week and do my best. I was pretty hungry for the ball, so I called it and we were lucky enough we scored off it."
For Wendell's part, he conceded his two-try performance for Shellharbour on Saturday had not yet opened the door to the NRL.
"I'm certainly not getting carried away with last week, it's just good to be back," he said.
