Woman of steel: Shellharbour bodybuilder goes pro

02 Dec, 2009 09:02 AM
What started as a hobby has led to a world title for Shellharbour bodybuilder Sharon Wingate.

Wingate won the Ms Fit Body division at the WNBF/INBF World Championships in New York last month.

Her victory means Wingate can compete against professionals next year, having taken up the sport in 2007.

"Weight training came from the need to do something for myself outside of work and being a mother; my husband (David Wingate) did martial arts at the time and I had no intention of competing," Wingate said.

"It's mind-blowing - an incredible feeling to win a world championship.

"I stuck to a strict training regimen for 12 months."

Wingate trained an hour a day for nine months before working out three times a day in the three months before the world championships.

She had won at Asia-Pacific and NSW level before pursuing international glory.

Wingate and her family returned from the United States late last month after a well-earned holiday.

It is pretty terrible when a women looks like that. I just cannot fathom why a woman would want to do that to herself.

I'd much rather someone who looks "too fit" or "too muscly" for some than an overweight couch potato. Sure, you might not think it looks great but her dedication, discipline and success should be applauded.

How anyone can see any form or "art" or beauty in that is beyond me.

I think she looks great. This is a competition photo and she is very lean but off season she'd be a few kilos heavier and would look different. Good on you Sharon, keep up the good work!

Actually the photo looks nothing like her and is very unflattering. Well done Sharon, considering you have only been doing this for 2 years and it started as a hobby, what greater accolade than a world title!

This woman is in peak physical condition, and she looks fantastic. She only looks this slim for competition, not on a daily basis. The men who think she looks awful are no doubt accustomed to a McDonalds drive through figure, and think that's 'normal'. She must be extremely strong-willed to have been able to keep on her training program for so long. Congratulations and good luck for future titles.
