Classy young halfback Blake Dureau scored two tries and kicked eight goals as competition leaders Wests outclassed Collegians 48-10 at WIN Stadium yesterday.
Dureau's personal tally of 24 points and his combination with his brother, five-eighth Nathan Dureau, who also scored a try, helped guide the Red Devils to an impressive win.
Wests had led 12-6 at half-time.
"Blake's learning and Nate's learning too. They're good talented footballers but they're still very young in the head," Wests coach Paul McGregor said of their partnership.
"They're getting educated and going real well.
"They're improving each week and they're good kids. They're our steering wheel," he said.
Right winger Michael Crockett and centre Carl Fritz both bagged a double and hooker Matt Clarke one try.
The victory enabled Wests to consolidate their place at the top of the table, four points clear of second-placed Corrimal.
At half-time McGregor challenged his players to increase their intensity after the interval and they did so in emphatic fashion.
"Collies obviously went out there to slow our play-the-ball down and they did that quite well in the first half," McGregor said.
"Once we put the foot on the pedal I thought we really increased the tempo of the game and they failed to keep up with it."
Collies' points scorers were halfback Grant Smith, with a try and a conversion, and his brother, five-eighth Ryan Smith, with a try.
Even though Collies were without five regulars, including their entire three-quarter line, coach Gavin Clinch refused to use that as an excuse.
"I didn't think our three-quarter line played too bad," Clinch said.
"They (Wests) were too fast for us and we missed too many one-on-one tackles.
"It was very, very, very disappointing. We leaked 48 points," he noted.
Despite yesterday's loss, Collies retain fourth place in the competition.
Helensburgh moved into equal fifth with Dapto and Shellharbour slipped to third after the Tigers' 32-20 win at Rex Jackson Oval yesterday.
The Tigers led 18-10 at half-time and went on with the job in the second term.
For Helensburgh, Steve Gibara scored two tries and Ben Haran, Chris Astill, Steve McCallum and Dale Sullivan one each, while Eamon Hillen kicked four goals.
Travis Roche grabbed a double for the Sharks, Matt Michalowsi and Tim Smith one each, and Scott Jones and Smith both kicked a goal.
Points: Wests 20*, Corrimal 16*, Shellharbour 14*, Collegians 13, Dapto 12, Helensburgh 12*, Thirroul 11*, Berkeley* 0. * Deferred game to be played
