Brave Blues unable to stop Maroons sweep

08 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
Just when it seemed there couldn’t possibly be any more pain, NSW hearts were broken all over again.

A pride-salvaging victory in a series already lost was within reach at ANZ Stadium last night before two late Queensland tries snatched any hope for a bright Origin future.

The Blues were beaten 23-18 in front of 61,259 fans, with Willie Tonga scoring in the moments before full-time after Billy Slater had taken back the lead in the 74th minute.

  • Full coverage of the Dragons

Before Slater struck, it seemed NSW would march to the win they so desperately needed.

After trailing 13-6 at the break, the Blues found themselves genuinely in the contest on 46 minutes when Kurt Gidley scored.

All of a sudden the pressure was poured on the reigning champions.

Halfback Mitchell Pearce grubbered for Brett Morris, but while the ball was cleaned up by Israel Folau, he was in turn shut down in-goal by the tackle of NSW centre Michael Jennings for a repeat set.

It also sparked a push and shove which quickly grew to involve NSW enforcer Greg Bird and Queensland hitman Sam Thaiday.

Still the Blues came, retiring captain Trent Barrett punched a kick across field aimed at debutant Michael Gordon’s wing which proved too hot to handle.

NSW’s moment may well have come when fullback Jarryd Hayne swept on to a Barrett pass and into the clear - but for St George Illawarra winger Brett Morris dropping the final pass cold.

Finally, in the 63rd minute, the Blues’ time to charge to the lead had surely come. It seemed certain, but somehow, Slater made a desperate, lunging tackle to hold Anthony Watmough in a manner that seemed almost physically impossible.

The Maroons just kept holding on in the spirit that has made them famous.

And then it happened - the blue tide finally broke the dam wall.

Hooker Michael Ennis shoved a grubber kick into the in-goal and Greg Bird dived on it.

The first half showed no indication of NSW domination.

  • But the threat of a NSW annihilation loomed large throughout the opening 20 minutes.

Queensland had secured 58 per cent of possession and were camped down on the Blues line when St George Illawarra star Darius Boyd finally broke them open.

It had looked likely on a number of occasions beforehand, with Darren Lockyer producing an ominous chip for Folau which was tantalisingly out of reach.

The Boyd try resulted from the next set after a dropout.

The ease of Queensland’s second try set alarm bells ringing all around ANZ Stadium when Nate Myles strolled over from short range on 28 minutes.

But hard-headed NSW second-rower Paul Gallen showed the Blues the way with a barging run to crash over between the posts after the Blues had seen a rare glimpse of the Queensland line in the 34th minute.

The half-time lead extended to 13-6 just before the break, with captain Darren Lockyer showing the class which has made him an Origin great in what could be his representative swansong when he snapped a 42m field goal.

QUEENSLAND 23 (D Boyd N Myles B Slater W Tonga tries J Thurston 3 goals D Lockyer field goal) bt NSW 18 (G Bird P Gallen K Gidley tries M Gordon 3 goals) at ANZ Stadium.

    Nearly, but not quite.

Queensland deserved to win the series the way they did coz they were more consistant than NSW. However one thing that stood out in the whole series in my opinion was the difference in refereeing. If it was an NRL game and Sam Thaiday had charged into brawls late hitting any NSW player he saw from behind with cheap shots he would have been sent off. He did this several times over the series and it should be reviewed and he should be dealt with accordingly. Even the commentry team on Channel 9 said it was a cowardly act.

That isnt very fair alli. You could blame a lot of people. Morris for droping Hayne's pass, Watmough for not grounding the ball, Ennis for giving that stupid penalty that led to the winning Queensland try, etc. Its a team effort and unfortunately the team was not good enough. Besides, Beau is a defensive centre and plays this role wonderfully well for the Dragons. He protects Soward and is a major reason why we are the top defensive team in the competition. With Gaz replacing him, our right side defense is a liability. Gaz isnt the best defender, thats why Stade Francais put him on the wing when he was playing union. We don't need Gasnier. What a waste of salary cap space.

State of Origin is now dead and buried, thank goodness! Bring on the RUGBY tests!

Count, not sure if you have heard but apparently there have been some Rugby tests on lately. You may not be aware because NO ONE CARES! Nothing was mentioned on sports programs or newspapers though. I just happened to stumble across it one night waiting for a James Bond re-run. I'd like to think though that when I flicked over for all of 3 secs it dramatically increased the viewing % for your struggling sport. Thanks for contributing though to the comments on the League stories, maybe one day the Mercury will run a Rugby story and you could contribute to that? hahaha, only joking, we both know it would be a waste of the reporters time.

Good call Bit Harsh. when I read the comment my thought was that alli must have lost a poker hand to Scott. I don't think we should be trying to apportion blame anywhere - the Blues certainly had their opportunities. They lost to a champion team. Congrats to Gidley and Barrett for their outstanding efforts.

Thanks freddy, at least ya reading my posts. As we all know, the NRL is the little brother to the english super league, which is the little sister to RUGBY. Like I have stated before, thugby league is simple, for the simple people. We still have many many more tests to play against many more countries yet. ..... thugby league plays who in tests? N.Z. and ungland. WOW!!! a game played in 3 countries, even aussie rules is played in more countries. bahahahahaha... hahaha!

Count ,Rugby League is played in a lot of countries. France, New Guinea,Fiji,Tonga,USA (you know, all those little countries you rugger boys like to claim, but Leagues got them too). As well as the main ones you mentioned. It is just that we don't embarrass ourselves playing the minnows and calling it a Test like you lot do. Tell us Count just what is so smart about Rugby? Deciding whether to kick the ball, fall on the ground in a ugly heap or remembering if you have the loose head? Oh that's it, you have to be smart to remember the 5,000 different rules and their interpretation. All of this adds up to one mighty boring spectacle. If simple means non-stop action, speed and the hardest hits you'll see in any code in the world, then I'll stay a simple man for the rest of my life. Laugh your head off Count but all your'e doing is laughing at yourself and the most unwatched game in Australia.

freddy the count definately knows no-one cares, it's good to see he is trying to "troll" his elitist views in the merc. he will have a busy couple of weeks going to court to support the supremely educated upper class kurtly beale and quade cooper. how dare they arrest such upstanding young gentlemen! surely it must be some mistake and it was league players instead. BAHAHAHA
