North Queensland boss Peter Parr yesterday revealed his interest in signing more St George Illawarra players offloaded to relieve the salary cap pressure caused by the return of Mark Gasnier.
The Cowboys have already snared what they believe is a future NRL superstar in young Dragons winger Kalifa Fai Fai Loa.
They've also passed on signing Jeremy Smith, who is likely to join the Sharks after Parr refused to meet the price tag placed on the Kiwi international.
Full coverage of the Dragons The club is the most active in the player market and Parr said he would continue to monitor the Dragons' situation.
Starting the rebuilding process after a woeful NRL season, the Cowboys have already attracted young Brisbane back Antonio Winterstein and veteran Brent Tate to the club next year.
St George Illawarra let go of Queensland State of Origin enforcer Neville Costigan and Fai Fai Loa after Gasnier's lucrative $1.9 million comeback.
Parr's declaration will have alarm bells ringing among Dragons fans nervous about the number of players lost to cater for Gasnier.
"We're very active in the market, in regards to forwards in particular," Parr told the Mercury.
"We've already got Kalifa, (Antonio) Winterstein and Brent Tate signed up, so our backline is taken care of.
"But the Saints have some terrific forwards and if a Dragons player was to become available because of the Gasnier situation, we'd certainly look at them.
"At the moment Smith is the only one who's come to our attention, but you know with any St George player they're going to be well-schooled because they have such a good system in place."
Dragons utility Nick Emmett is one player the Cowboys are likely to chase, but Parr wouldn't rule out pursuing other higher-profile names.
Parr was thrilled by the signing of Fai Fai Loa, claiming he had been interested in the 20-year-old for some time.
The Cowboys have previously missed out on Dragons' Toyota Cup five-eighth Beau Henry, who will join Costigan at Newcastle next year.
After showing he can cut it at NRL level in two starts for St George Illawarra this season, Fai Fai Loa is being touted as a future successor to lightning Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen.
"It will be up to the coaching staff to consider his future role, but he has already made a name for himself as a winger in the under 20 competition and in the NRL," Parr said.
"I wouldn't be surprised for him to develop as a fullback, starting as back-up for Bowen."
