Dragons can still blow it: Titans coach

26 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
Gold Coast coach John Cartwright believes the minor premiership race has been blown wide open after the Titans' stunning extra-time boilover against St George Illawarra.

Cartwright admitted his charges were going to have to fight just as hard as they did in the 11-10 win over the competition-leading Dragons to secure a spot in the top eight.

But his comments also served as a warning for St George Illawarra, who will have to hold their nerve to claim a second straight minor premiership following last year's severe case of the wobbles in the lead-up to the finals series.

The Dragons are now on 30 competition points and remain four points clear at the top of the NRL ladder following Manly's victory over the Wests Tigers yesterday.

Gold Coast remain in the top eight, but are one of several teams under pressure as Parramatta launch another remarkable surge towards the finals.

Cartwright said Friday night's win showed the Dragons couldn't be too comfortable on top of the ladder.

"It's going to be close," he said.

"It's going to be very, very tight.

"I don't think from minor premiers to side eight (that any team) can be assured at the moment.

"We're on 24 points, we've got six games where there's 12 points available, we would love to think we could finish on 36."

The play-offs will heat up this week for the Dragons in preparation for the trip to Brisbane to play the Broncos on Sunday.

It was at Suncorp Stadium last year that St George Illawarra became the first minor premiers since 1993 to bow out with consecutive finals losses, having been beaten by Parramatta in their qualifying final the previous week.

Don't like to say it but I can feel some choking coming on soon.

It's deja vu all over again. Last week against the rabbits and Friday against the Titans the Dragons looked lost, disorganised and had zero attack. The introduction of Gasnier has not produced a tryfest. It seems to have disrupted the teams pattern. Hope they can sort this all out before the semis. And oh look here come Parramatta again.

I don't think the Dragons choke. They're just not that good a side. They are very predcitable and they can't go to the next gear when they have too because they don't have one. When you were watching the game the other night which player came to mind to break open the game for us. None. That's the problem. Think of superstars and the Dragons don't have any. Hayne, Thurston, Cronk, Smith, Inglis, Slater, Lockyer, Prince, Marshall, Watmough. No Dragons there.

Jay. thurstons got to be the most overated player i have ever seen. The only times he has ever done anything is when someone is dumb enough to fall for one of his dummy and goes. If no-one is dumb enough to fall for one of his dummy and goes and just go up and tackle him whether he passes or not instead of standing and watching then his got nothing. As the ladder suggests year after year. His only a goal kicker.

League Fan, has never played apparently Thought it was interesting, one of the games on the w/end ,commentator's said *LOOK'S LIKE THE REF'S ARE GOING TO ABIDE BY THE 10MTR RULE* must of been one off, certainly didn't do it in DRAGON'S game=low scoring game's.It's hard to score point's when the opposition are in your face 90% of the time. You can not really see it ,on T.V at the moment, because the T.V camera's are not really panning out far enough. On that game any way The ref's are making so many mistake's because, they can not even keep up to the pace of the game!! and the lack of the 10mtr rule, they need to slow it down a tad ,so they can get back to controlling it!!

df. How hard is it not to fall for a dummy. I did it once when i was starting to play and it embarresed the f#@* out of me and i never fell for another one ever again. And when did you play.??????? did you say you were a mum in a previous article??.Not sure? Anyway. Cant believe you havent seen the only time he ever breaks the line is when someones dumb enough to fall for a dummy and go. He tries hard but he cant play. Makes a few scrambling tackles here and there but thats about it. Also misses alot of tackles. Anyway. Just saying his the most overated player ive seen.

LEAGUE FAN;AS a mum you may as well say, i play every time my 3 boy's have gone out on the footy field, since they started playing 1989, i have played touch footy myself, and have never missed one of their games,so maybe i qualify ?I understand what your saying about THURSTON, think i've even seen Lockeyer be dumb enough to be fooled by a couple of his dummy passes. One of the world's greatest league player's.Just thought you could have used a better reference than that, after all it is part of our great but hard game!! I'm lucky i feel their pain mentally not physically..

seriously, who cares about the minor premiership. i'd rather take the pressure off us in the finals than carry that expectation of winning the competiton. the eels of 2001 is a choke. the dragons don't exactly choke, they just havn't reached that gear yet. maybe wayne bennett is timing their form for the finals. he is the master at winning premierships. but i really hope something gets done about our forwards go forward and our attack, otherwise we'll fail miserably again. in wayne we trust

DF. Nah thats my reference allright. Watched alot of cowboy games. Use to live there for 4 yrs. Every time he gets the ball i call dummy and players fall for it and stand there and watch and let him through, all im saying is that i got no idea how they can fall for it but its no where near as many as it use too. And when they dont fall for it he offers very little in attack and the cowboys tend to lose. Only an average halfback. Thats why in my opinion he is so overated. And as for their success in 2005, 99% of that was Bowen and all the dumb defenders i saw being dumb enough to fall for a thurston dummy and go.
