Dragons' form lifts Ben Creagh's rep spirits

16 Apr, 2009 12:01 PM
St George Illawarra second-rower Ben Creagh believes he is playing better than when he made the Kangaroos tour squad back in 2005.

Creagh is certain he is performing more consistently in the NRL than when he went to Brisbane as 18th man for the NSW State of Origin team two years ago.

But the prospect of finally wearing that sky blue jumper this year is something Creagh is reticent to speak about.

After overcoming niggling injuries which dogged him last season, Creagh is playing with renewed confidence under new Dragons coach Wayne Bennett.

Creagh is in full flight, producing his trademark damaging runs down the left edge again and handling the occasional switch into the centres with ease.

Having played for Country Origin between 2005-07, Creagh admitted representing NSW was a goal he had set.

"Definitely mate, after being 18th man two years ago for the third Origin in Brisbane it's something I have definitely wanted to do," he said.

"Just getting to see the boys train and be in camp, so yeah, I'd love to one day.

"It's a goal I set every year, but it's not something I really want to talk up.

"I don't want to seem like I'm saying, 'I'm putting my hand up to play Origin', I just want to keep doing my job for the Dragons."

With St George Illawarra on top of the NRL ladder after five rounds on the back of their brutal defence, it was inevitable several Dragons would be thrown into the mix for Origin selection.

Creagh and props Justin Poore and Michael Weyman are firmly in consideration.

Fullback Darius Boyd, who would not speak to the Mercury yesterday, and winger Wendell Sailor are on the short-list north of the border.

Creagh has produced some excellent form for St George Illawarra this year, but when quizzed on the rangy second-rower's early-season resurgence, Bennett made it clear the 24-year-old still had things to work on.

"He (Bennett) has always got something new for me," Creagh said.

"In both attack and defence, I'm not going to go into specifics about it, but yeah, there's always little things to work on."

Still, Creagh is adamant he has evolved as a player since making his debut for Australia against France back in 2005.

"It was a big moment for me making that Kangaroos squad," he said.

"But over the years I like to think I've played a lot more consistent footy.

"I've always been working on playing more minutes and just been trying to improve as a player."
