St George Illawarra CEO Peter Doust has ruled out offering a lifeline to unwanted Sydney Roosters forward Willie Mason.
The former Test player has been granted leave from Roosters preseason training until January and is seeking a new club.
Reports yesterday linked the 2004 Clive Churchill medallist with the Dragons but Doust rubbished the claims.
"The Dragons are not interested in Willie Mason," Doust said yesterday, before adding the club was not in the market for any players, even after the recent retirement of Wendell Sailor.
"Our roster is complete for 2010."
Sailor is close friends with Mason and is represented by the same sports management company in Sydney, AMI Sport and Entertainment. St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett helped salvage Sailor's career after a two-year drug ban. Many felt he could do the same for Mason, who has had disciplinary issues in the past and who struggled for form in 2009.
Mason still has a year to run on his contract at the Roosters, a deal worth in excess of $400,000 per season.
The 29-year-old is exploring options in Japanese rugby union and was also linked with the Melbourne Storm yesterday.
Even if the Storm or Dragons were willing to take on the troubled star it would appear neither club has the cap space to accommodate him.
If Catalans Dragons five-eighth Greg Bird can find an NRL club, there may be an opportunity at the French Super League club for Mason.
Meanwhile, tickets to St George Illawarra's first trial match next year go on sale today. The Dragons are scheduled to play Parramatta at ME Bank Stadium in Perth on Sunday, February 14.
The club will make a five-day visit to Western Australia and take part in a number of community activities to help promote rugby league in the west.
The Dragons will play two other trials: against the Bulldogs in the Mercury Challenge at WIN Stadium on February 20 and the Charity Shield against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium a week later.
